Finance Trustee

Hospice at Home Carlisle and North Lakeland (Hospice at Home), is a local, independent charity committed to providing high quality care and support for adults who have palliative and end of life care needs and also for their relatives/carers.

We are looking for an experienced, passionate, and credible individual to join the board as our new Finance Trustee.

Our Trustees make a meaningful difference to the lives of those within our community, supporting the charity in its mission to provide much needed care and support to patients, family members and carers who may be facing difficult times in their lives.

Our Trustees come from a variety of backgrounds, all with different specialisms and experiences, with a shared commitment to the development and success of Hospice at Home Carlisle and North Lakeland (HHCNL).

The Role

Trustees are legally accountable for managing the charity's finances; in collaboration with other Board members, the Finance Trustee oversees the governance, strategy, and performance of the charity and its related operations.

The core responsibility of the Finance Trustee is to maintain a comprehensive overview of the charity's financial position and the conduct of its financial affairs. This enables them to provide well-grounded advice to the Board of Trustees, the CEO and the Director of Finance and Business. This role requires a close working relationship with the Chair of the Finance and Income Generation sub-committee.

Individually, your role would include:

 

In liaison with the Chair of the Finance and Income Generation sub-committee undertake the following: 

  • Receive and report on budgets, accounts, investment returns, and financial statements to the Board of Trustees.
  • Assure the Board that the financial resources of HHCNL meet its present and future needs.
  • Ensure the charity has appropriate policies for reserves and investments.
  • Ensure that appropriate accounting procedures and controls are in place, including oversight of all the bank accounts, investments and cash deposits, with capability to authorise payments, in exceptional circumstance.
  • Ensure the charity's compliance with legislation and governance.
  • Help the executive team manage risk.

 

Collectively, the Board of Trustees must:

  • Ensure that all responsibilities of the Board of Trustees, delegated to the Chief Executive and Senior Management Team are carried out.
  • Ensure that funds received by HHCNL are properly managed and accounted for.
  • Develop a long- term strategy for HHCNL and determine its overarching policy and direction.
  • Function effectively as a team, working together towards common ends.

 

 Commitment

  • There are six board meetings per year to which you will commit to at least a minimum of 50% attendance. From 2025 this all board and sub-committee meetings will be quarterly. You would also play a critical role on the Finance and income generation sub-committee of which these are quarterly. 
  • Trustees can serve for a period of up to nine years, but will stand for re-election every 3 years in accordance with the Articles of Association (2024).


About You

For this role, we’re looking for candidates with a proven, professional track record in a finance or accounting role. Ideally, a Qualified Accountant, with experience of corporate and/or charity governance would be advantageous, as would experience of working as part of a Board. More than anything, we’re looking for candidates who share our vision and commitment to providing high quality care and support for adults who have palliative and end of life care needs.
