Thank you very much for your interest in the Hospice at Home 20 Challenge and The Wildlife Wander, kindly sponsored by Story Homes! The information below will hopefully encourage you to join us on Saturday 2nd June 2018 for a day of beautiful scenery, delicious refreshments and great camaraderie – whichever distance you aim to complete. There are three walks to choose from which all start and finish at Braithwaite Institute, near Keswick.

What is the 20 Challenge?
Our toughest route is Option 1: The 20 Challenge and requires stamina, energy and training! The challenging walk covers 20 miles of stunning Lake District scene
ry, with 10 summits to
conquer along the way. The day wil
l begin at 6am for registration and a “Grab and Go” breakfast station will be provided to give you an energising boost to start the day. You will cli
mb Catbells, Maiden Moor, High Spy, Dale Head and Robinson and at the top of each summit we ask you to ch
eck in with our volunteer event marshalls. If you have any queries they are on hand to assist you. A refreshment stop is provided at Buttermere, just over 11 miles into the route. Snacks and water will be available here, although each participant is required to bring their own lunch. You will then climb Whiteless Pike, Wandope, Crag Hill, Sail and Barrow before your triumphant arrival back to Braithwaite Institute. Refreshments will be served and the great celebrations will begin!
Is there a shorter option?
Yes! Option 2: The 20 Challenge (half route). There is an option to complete an 11 mile route with 5 summits. This option follows the same route as above, however the walk will finish at Buttermere and return transport to Braithwaite Institute will be provided. Refreshments will be served at the finish.
The registration fee to take part in the 20 Challenge (both routes) is £30 per person and is non-refundable. This includes:
- Grab and Go Breakfast station (fruit, light snacks, tea and coffee)
- Snacks and water at Buttermere
- Refreshments on arrival at the finish line
- Support en route, including return transport to Braithwaite, if required
- Fundraising Support
- A Hospice at Home 20 Challenge t-shirt (which we require you to wear during the event)
- A water bottle and certificate
We encourage each participant to aim to raise £125 in sponsorship and fundraising guides are provided to help you achieve this. Every penny raised will make a huge difference to local patients.
You must enter in teams of 2 people or more, which can be a mix of your family, friends, colleagues and neighbours – all we ask is that participants to be over the age of 16 (under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult), be of reasonable fitness to complete the challenge and be willing to train and fundraise for Hospice at Home.

Yes! This year we have introduced a new route – Option 3: The Wildlife Wander. This is a 9 mile guided, low level walk for families and friends of all ages to enjoy. Registration will take place from 9am and the route will take you along Newlands Beck and the Catbells Terrace, along the shore of Derwentwater and through the beautiful Lingholm Estate where a visit to the spectacular Walled Garden will take place, before returning across farmland to Braithwaite. There will be lots of opportunities to see and hear wildlife so keep an eyes and ears open!
The Registration fee to take part in The Wildlife Wander is £15 per adult, £5 per child (aged 5 – 14) or FREE for under 5s and is non-refundable. This includes:
- Guided walk with commentary about the local area and wildlife
- Refreshments on arrival at the finish line
- Fundraising Support
- A Hospice at Home Wildlife Wander t-shirt (which we require you to wear during the walk)
- A certificate

Whichever route you choose, your support will make huge difference to the lives of local patients and their families.
- Participants are expected to make their own travel arrangements to the start of the event. For the 20 Challenge, unfortunately we would prefer dogs to be left at home due to the number of participants we are hoping to have on the event.
- We highly recommend that you prepare and train for your chosen route. Please wear strong footwear during your training that you plan to wear on the event itself. This will enable you to get used to the footwear and will minimise the chance of blisters.
- A full kit list is included in the information pack, although waterproofs, a map, compass, small first aid kit, blister plasters and water are must-have items, which should all be carried during your training. We are hoping 2nd June will be a lovely summer’s day but you never know with our Cumbrian weather and it’s better to be prepared!
By joining us on this special day, you will be helping to raise an estimated £25,000 for Hospice at Home Carlisle and North Lakeland, which provides a free service for patients in the North and East of Cumbria who have a life-limiting or life threatening illness and wish to be cared for at home with all that is loved and familiar around them. Support is also provided to the patient’s family and loved ones. We would encourage everyone to raise as much as possible and make this a top fundraiser for the Charity.
